Chess

All students learn how to play chess – even kindergarteners

Why Chess?
Because we've found that playing chess is invaluable for our students in developing mental focus that translates into the classroom, and beyond.

On Wednesdays your child participates in a hotly contested in-house chess tournament. .

Even more than that, some of our students have gone on to do well in local chess tournaments, and even participate in the state chess championship

Jiu-Jitsu

Kids love this. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is both a practical and engaging martial art that focuses on controlling a fully resisting opponent.

But more than a martial art, it's a discipline in which students will be confronted with the frustration of losing, and being physically controller by smaller, but more skilled training partners.

Students who learn to perservere through these challenges and develop greater self control, and calm under stress not just on the mats, but in life.

Focus and Perseverance

With these, students are better equipped to learn today, and grow into who we all want for them to be in the future.

Monitored playground time may "check the box" for your child, But we go beyond that to help build the skill and character that throughout your child's life will empower them to shape their own life.

Competition Opportunities

Mat Chess Kids have a long tradition of both competition wins, and life lessons learned from those competitions and their Preparation.

We always aim to win, but losses are accepted with grace and taken as the learning experiences they are.
Students learn the fundamentals, are then work to create a strategy for both attack and defense before competing.

Competition Preparation

Before competition, students go through a six-week training camp to prepare mentally, physically and strategically.

Each student works with our coaches to create a game plan of their own unique “superpowers.”

That is their game plan, and list of techniques they will use from each position they can find themselves in during competition.

Sparring sessions focus on using these “superpower” moves – focusing on using the techniques they are best at. This prepares each student to use those movements in competition – but more importantly, helps them to build confidence in themselves and in their movement.

Competition is a great force for motivation and concentration, testing the technique and the skills that students have been learning in a way that is hard to replicate in the gym. Tournaments can lead to great moments of self discovery and focus thanks to the intense nature of martial arts and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition.
