Gym Etiquette for Beginners

Every martial arts gym has its own rhythm and customs. If you’ve never stepped on a mat before, that can feel like one more reason to put off your first class. It shouldn’t be. Here’s what to expect so you can walk into class feeling confident, not confused.

Before You Step on the Mats

  • Arrive with clean hands, feet, and trimmed nails. You’ll be in close contact with training partners, so hygiene is a mat-wide courtesy.
  • Remove shoes before stepping onto the mats.
  • Take off jewelry and watches. Rings and chains catch on gis and skin more than people expect.

During Class

  • Show respect for the space when you step on and off the mats. Whether that’s a nod, a handshake, or just a quick acknowledgment, it’s a small habit that keeps the room feeling intentional.
  • Listen fully when an instructor is demonstrating, even if you’ve drilled the move before.
  • Tap early, tap often. Tapping isn’t losing; it’s how everyone gets to train again tomorrow. Tap by voice or by tapping your partner or the mat clearly.
  • Match your intensity to your partner’s experience level, especially with beginners.

General Gym Courtesy

  • Wash your gi or gear after every session. Nobody wants to grapple with day-old sweat.
  • Keep gear bags off the mats.
  • New to the room? Don’t be afraid to say so. Most training partners will dial things back and walk you through it.

Good etiquette is what lets a room full of people grapple, strike, and spar safely together, session after session, across every class we offer.
