Mat Chess is a great gym and community to train with. The coaches, especially Andrew, genuinely care about the development and experience of every member, which shows in both the quality of the instruction and the gym culture. Other members/teammates go out of their way every practice to help each other learn and make new people feel comfortable. The classes are thoughtfully designed to make efficient use of your training time, with an emphasis on understanding the system and the “why” behind the drills and techniques you’re learning, rather than just going through the motions. There’s also a strong focus on developing a game that works for you. Coaches are attentive and regularly give individual feedback during classes. For those who want to compete, the coaches take that seriously and work to make sure competitors have the skills and game plan they need to succeed. If you’re on the fence about starting your martial arts journey, I would highly recommend signing up for a trial class at Mat Chess for a welcoming experience.

Started at Mat Chess a few years ago while attending college. The gym is incredibly accommodating to all experience levels and really developed me in my athletic pursuits. Since it features both grappling and striking classes in the morning and evening, it allows for a lot of flexibility in schedule and interests. Additionally, the coaches are highly experienced in their disciplines and provide thoughtful insights & demonstrations to techniques. Loved it, and highly recommend if you're in the area.

Had a free Muay Thai trial class this week, and it was hands down the worst experience I’ve ever had. I’ve had months of classes at another gym, but new to sparring, comparing to that gym this one is a nightmare! The gym is in a windowless basement with almost no airflow. It was unbelievably hot, humid, and suffocating. There is an AC unit, but they don’t keep it running because it’s too loud. The air felt stale, and the environment was incredibly uncomfortable. I honestly felt like someone could suffer from heat exhaustion or even heatstroke in those conditions. What shocked me even more was the sparring. The class was almost entirely sparring, yet no one was wearing headgear or body protection. The coach kept saying, “Just play, don’t hit hard,” but that’s not how sparring works. Once people start exchanging punches and kicks, accidents happen. You simply can’t guarantee that every strike will stay under control. Having no professionals spar without proper protective equipment is, in my opinion, an unacceptable safety risk. A hard kick or punch to the head or abdomen can cause serious injury, especially for girl, a kick on abdominal could lead to death. This is especially concerning for people with little experience. I genuinely don’t understand how this is considered an acceptable training environment. Between the poor ventilation and the lack of protective gear, I left feeling that basic safety was not being taken seriously. I would never recommend this gym to beginners or anyone looking for a safe place to learn Muay Thai.

Great place to train for those new to combat sports or seasoned. Visiting from out of town, I found that coach Andrew taught solid fundamentals in systems that would translate well to the real world + comp. This was reinforced by seeing that each of his students had clear goals they were working towards in each position (e.g. covering and controlling the hips as a key when on the ground). Overall thoroughly impressed, will definitely be back in the future!
